After tracing my Bayerls backwards from Nürnberg, through Dinkelsbühl, and to Affing, I discovered that before Affing there was Edenried.  Edenried is now and was probably then a very small village about 5 km to the SE (Map) of Affing. I had half expected to find that the Bayerls came to Affing from Gundelsdorf where a cursory review of church books showed there were many Bayerls for a long time, and from where at least a few went to Affing. It was clear though that the first Bayerl from my line to go to Affing was Johann who came from Edenried and married Magdalena of Affing.

I have had an opportunity to review the indexes of the church books of Edenried, (and later) microfilm of the actual record entries.  Some preliminary things could be said at the onset. There are indeed a few Bayerls in the index, enough for one generation, but not before 1716. There is one marriage, that of Martin after 1718. There are a half-dozen births, one of which is a Johann- Nepo. I do not see a Martin birth, but there is a Martin death before 1802, and there is a Maria death soon after 1802.  The name is spelled Baÿerl in the birth index, and Baÿrl in the marriage and death indexes. There are other variations too. Once again, so much for consistency!

Subsequently I found the birth record of Martin in Haunsweiss, a village very near to Edenried where his parents, Michael and Elisabetha, lived before going to Edenried around 1719.

In a list of the 29 families living in Edenried compiled sometime between 1837 and 1854, there is no Bayerl named.*  It therefore appears that Edenried was just another two-generation stop in the travels of my Bayerl family line.  From Edenried Johann would go to Affing and have Leonhard who in turn had Joseph, who would go to Dinkelsbühl and have Xaver Jakob, who would go to Nürnberg and have Carolina Theresa, who would come to America and have Franz Xaver Jakob , who would have me! A family tree chart of individuals above is presented here, with links to relevant records and discussion.

* In the late 1800's there was living in House #19 a Theresa Baierle, born 1856 in U. Wittelsbach and who married Joseph Schmiderer.
