This couple are my 5G Grandparents. I learned their names and was sent to Edenried to find them by the marriage record in Affing of their son Johann. Available records for Martin are discussed below.  What I have learned abour Maria Mall, including her death record, is presented on another page.

I easily found baptismal records in Edenried for three children of Martin and Maria: Maria *1764, Adam *1764, and Joseph Nepomucenus *1766. These three children had +crosses affixed to their entries signifying that there had been an infant death. For such deaths, I could not locate additional death records in the books. (This apparently was the common practice.) There appears also to have been a second Johann Nepo. who survived at least until his confirmation in 1782.

The first hard evidence I had for Martin was his marriage and death records from Edenried.  The marriage record immediately below tells less than I would like.  It gives only the date of 28 Sep 1762, the fact that he is a juvenes (unmarried 20-45) man, the name of his wife (Maria Mall from Gallenbach), and the names of two witnesses (Sebastian Pfaffenzeller and Joseph Rothmayr). Gallenbach is a little village about 10 km. to the SE.  Sebastian must have been a good friend as the families serve as godparents and witnesses for each other's family sacraments. (Note that Martin is a witness above, with Anthony Pfaffenzeller, to the marriage of Thomas Hammer.)

The hoped-for facts that are not listed are the names of the bridal couple's parents or where they were born.  I hope to make the case in these pages that Martin is the son of Michael and Elizabeth, but so far I lack both a birth certificate and the identification in this marriage record to make a self-proving link.

As I worked my way through the evidence available I wondered if anything was to be made from distinctions in the use of 'in' (in) and 'de' (from, as in born in.)  Thus, spouse Maria is 'de' Gallenbach and Martin is 'in' Edenried.  I do not know if this is a substantive or grammatical distinction but I am looking for clues!

We do know that Martin lived and died in Edenried.  Here is his death certificate, but it tells us nothing other than the date of death, 20 Jan, 1772.  We cannot even estimate a year of birth.

I had a stroke of luck that may provide the most useful piece of information about Martin: the finding of the record of a confirmation of Martin Bayerl in 1732. (Baiirle = Baÿrl) Martin's name appears on the same page as that of Apollonia who was confirmed in 1730 at the age of 10.  It is also spelled the same was as it was in Apollonia's baptism record. If Martin was baptized at the same age, we would estimate a year of birth to be 1722. [Martin's actual age at confirmation was 14.]  There is room in the lineup of the known children of Michael and Elizabetha for such a birth to occur.  I went back for a third and fourth time to try to find an Edenried birth record in that time interval and could not do so.  The records were such that if it had been present anywhere between 1718 and 1740 I would have found it. Neither was there another Martin of any family baptized in that interval. It remains possible that Martin simply did not have a record made (I think that may have happened to one of Martin's own children.) or that he was baptized in another village such as Haunswies.  It is also possible that Martin was an 'adopted" child from another family of another place.

Based on the date of the confirmation, the timing is right to allow him to be the oldest son. With a 1722 birth he would be 40 at the time of his marriage to Maria in 1762, and 50 at the time of his death in 1772.  His last known child was born in 1766.  He remains as head of a Bayerl household in Edenried as would be customary for an oldest son.  There are no other Bayerls in Edenried having children when Michael and Elizabeth are there and there were no other Bayerls in the Edenried records for as far back as they were available.  Perhaps I will get lucky and find records in another place, or will get other evidence when I visit the village in person.  However, for the time being, I will assume that Martin is the son of Michael and Elizabeth.

Addendum: 18 Apr 2009. I will leave my initial discussion above intact to give some flavor of the excitement of genealogical discovery, but based on clues found in Edenried, I finally located the birth record of Martin and an older brother in Haunswies.  The self-proving link connecting Martin to Michael and Elizabeth was found! The record immediately below from the church books of Haunswies tells us that Martin was born 8 Nov 1718. His parents were Michael Bairl and Elizabetha.  The godparent was Andreas Brandtmair. No other information about origns was provided. Note that in the last record of that image that Elisabetha Bairl(in) reciprocates as the godmother to Elisabetha, daughter of Andreas Bradtmair and Regina!

I went backwards and forwards in the Haunswies church books and found only the birth record of Andreas below.  There were two records where Michael Bayerl acted as a witness, but no marriage of Michael and Elizabetha, nor other children. Below is the record of Andreas' birth. Note that he takes the given name of his Godfather Andreas Brandtmair (?Bradntmayer).  In this record however, there is an additional snippet of information that I am hoping identifies where Michael was from. So far looking over modern maps of the area has not helped me translate the presumed location. We have been lucky before, and we may get lucky again.  I offer $100 prize to whoever can successfully identify the place of origin of Michael Bayrl. (I can send copies of surrounding pages to help deciphering the handwriting.)
