According to his marriage record in Affing, my 4G Grandfather Johann Bayerl was born in Edenried and his parents were Martin and Maria. You can imagine that I looked hard for a birth record for a Johann Baÿrlin the Edenried church books. The record below of the baptism of Johann Nepomuch is the only Baÿrl with a name of Johann listed in the index of births, or in any of the baptismal records that I looked at individually in Edenried. When I saw the cross in the margin, I assumed that it indicated that the child had died.  A Johann Nepomuch was confirned in 1782 and I assumed (incorrectly) that he was a second child with the same name. However, I never found any additional records with the name Johann Nepomuch other than the 1766 baptismal and 1782 confirmation/suffraganaus record when Johann Nepomuch #1 would have been 16 years old.

However, in 2015 I acquired some civil records that make it quite clear that a Johann Bayerl born in 1765 or 1766 was the son of Maria who left Edenried in 1788 to marry in Affing. It is clear to me now Johann is the same person as Johann Nepomuch born in 1766.  I believe the cross in the record was added later to indicate that Johann's father Martin had died.

All is not a perfect fit though.  The death record in Affing for Johann in 1835 states an age at death of 74 which would give a estimated year of birth of 1761.  This is a year before the marriage of his parents.  I am going to assume that this age at death was recorded (or read) incorrectly.

Although I am going to translate and discuss these later, for completeness are the civil records that prove that Johann Nepomuch is my 4G Grandfather. in these records, the family name is spelled Peyrl as it is in Aulzhausen where I found the baptismal record of Michael!  Note also that Martin's brother Simon survived, living in Harthausen, which I believe is outside München.

Note: As it happens, I found 3 or 4 other children in Edenried over 70 years who were named Johann Nepomucene- a curious name for a child and one I might simplify or drop if it were my name.  As it happens, these children are named after St. John Nepomucene, the Martyr of the Confessional.  He was a 12th century priest in nearby Bohemia who refused to divulge the confession of the Queen to the King and who paid a heavy price.  I understand that this local hero was canonized in 1727 so his name may have been frequently on the lips of the pious.  You can read about St John Nepo. here.
